New collaboration with a publisher from the Czech Republic
We have started a collaboration with Abalon Studio from Prague. We don’t need to introduce them to anyone interested in coins. In addition to fantastic graphic designs, they also deal with publications in the field of numismatics. From today, you can purchase their publications through us. Our bookstore features two beautifully published titles.
Jiří Veselský , Mince římské republiky
An expanded publication by a leading specialist in the numismatics of the Roman Republic. The author clearly introduces readers to the realities of ancient Roman numismatics, from its beginnings up to 27 BCE, the year in which Gaius Caesar Octavian was proclaimed Augustus. The reader is also provided with a brief political history of the Roman Republic, including a glossary of important terms and a series of indexes. A comprehensive overview of 169 Roman families is meticulously crafted, detailing how their members contributed organizationally to the functioning of Roman coin production and left varying degrees of artistic influence on the design of Roman coins.
A remarkable achievement of the author is the creation of the most comprehensive catalog of coins from the Roman Republic. This catalog is based on Crawford’s classification and includes a total of 1,812 distinct entries, of which 1,527 have been photographed. For easier navigation, it is organized by denominations and then chronologically. This exceptional publication attracts attention not only for its scope (544 pages in large format), the wealth of factual data, and interesting, engaging stories, but also for its graphic design. All photographs are in color, and the vast majority are enlarged. It is in these enlarged images that the impressive scenes depicted on Roman Republican coins stand out vividly, transporting readers back to a long-gone era. Most of the coins were photographed specifically for this publication, while some images were provided by renowned auction houses and other institutions.
Jan Videman , Moravské denáry 10.–12. století. Sbírka Pavel Šťastný III
Pavel Šťasný was one of the most prominent figures in the community of Czech and Moravian coin collectors for the past few decades. Since his student days, he has been building a collection of medieval emissions, focusing on coins from the 10th to the 13th century. Thanks to his concentrated interest, passion for collecting, and significant financial resources, he has managed to create a completely unique collection of Czech and Moravian denars and bracteates, which constitutes the most important collection of emissions from the Czech state from the 10th to the 13th century that has ever been created. In addition to a complete collection of more common emissions, it includes a number of monetary types and variants known in single or few specimens. He also prioritized including high-quality minted coins in good condition in his collection
With friends, he could talk about numismatics for long hours. On the other hand, the constant workload did not allow him to dedicate enough time to his collection and its development. He was all the more looking forward to a well-deserved retirement. He realized the research significance of his collection and planned to prepare it scientifically and make it available to the broader numismatic public in the form of a publication. Unfortunately, fate did not grant him enough time to realize his plan. He passed away prematurely in 2022. After his death, his life’s work was taken over by his wife, Dana. Aware of the uniqueness and importance of the collection, she agreed to publish the collection in the form of an edition, to which she herself significantly contributed
Currently, the third volume of the edition is being released, which covers Moravian denars from the 10th to the 12th century. The typical layout is based on Cachy’s typology, but has been adjusted according to numismatic research from the last fifty years. Among the Moravian emissions, numerous denars and obols appear for the first time, which until now had been classified in publications as Czech emissions. The catalog of Šťasný’s collection also includes a number of denars that earlier works on Moravian minting by Cachy (1970, 1972) and Videman and Paukert (2009) were not aware of. Compared to older works, many basic types have been clearly organized into variants. All coins are published in the form of enlarged, high-quality photographs and are described in detail. A practical part of the publication includes comparative tables to Cachy’s typology and Videman and Paukert. Cachy’s pen drawings are reproduced in full range. The text is authored by Jan Videman, a specialist in Moravian minting. The book is published by Abalon in collaboration with the auction house Macho & Chlapovič and the Czech Numismatic Society. Alongside Fiala’s “Czech Denars” (1895) and Cachy’s “The Oldest Czech Coins” (1970, 1972, 1974, 1982), the edition of Šťasný’s collection represents one of the most significant publishing achievements in the field of Czech medieval numismatics
