The studies presented in this volume summarise the results of excavations carried out in 1996-2000 in the so-called Bialystok section of the Yamal gas pipeline construction. In the course of these excavations 26 archaeological sites were recognised, with a total area of 6.5 ha. Seven of the most important are presented in this paper. They represent a broad chronological cross-section, covering the period from the Stone Age to modern times, and represent an objective selection of sources for the region. The volume is complemented by an analysis of flint artefacts and a synthesis on the settlement potential of the region. The texts were prepared for publication in 2002 and were to have appeared in the concluding publication series. This did not happen, however, and more than 15 years had to pass before the studies made at that time could be put into scientific circulation.
In the texts included in the volume, the authors attempted to capture the borderland character of the region, already in prehistory manifested in the intermingling of various cultural influences. This phenomenon is also visible today in the material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants of this part of Podlasie.
